Microsoft is working on a portable console that could revolutionize the video game market. Codenamed 'Keenan', this device is in an advanced stage of development and is expected to launch by the end of 2025. The company has chosen to collaborate with manufacturers such as ASUS, Lenovo, and MSI to bring this ambitious project to fruition.
Features and design of 'Keenan'
According to leaked information, 'Keenan' will be a device with its own identity within the Xbox ecosystem. Its design will include characteristic elements of the brand , such as the Xbox Guide button and a Windows-based operating system. This will allow the console to not only be compatible with the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass, but will also offer the ability to install and run games from other platforms like Steam.
The console's hardware remains a mystery, though speculation suggests it could use chips developed by AMD and Intel , optimized to ensure a balance between portability and power. Furthermore, it's expected to incorporate advanced tools for managing aspects like TDP and fan speed, facilitating a more personalized user experience.
The rise of handheld consoles and Microsoft's commitment
The handheld console market has experienced considerable growth in recent years, largely thanks to the success of devices like the Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally . Microsoft is looking to capitalize on this trend by offering an alternative that combines the best of Xbox and Windows. This move also aligns with the company's strategy to make Xbox a more open platform and better integrated with the PC ecosystem.
The console will not only offer a new hardware option, but will also serve as a testbed for improving Windows optimization on mobile devices . Microsoft is expected to implement specific widgets and tools in the Xbox Game Bar, making it easier to manage performance and the gaming experience.
The history of video game consoles has proven fascinating, and the release of 'Keenan' could add to this exciting narrative. It's indicative of how the market is evolving and adapting to the needs of modern gamers.
Furthermore, the 'Keenan' console is expected to offer enhanced game compatibility , potentially opening the door to a range of titles not traditionally available on handheld platforms. This includes the ability to install games from other platforms , such as Steam, making it an attractive option for gamers.
On the other hand, Microsoft has already begun development of the next generation of Xbox consoles . This new home console is expected to arrive in 2027 and will follow a similar philosophy to the handheld, offering greater integration with Windows and facilitating the transition between platforms. This strategy reinforces its commitment to keeping the Xbox ecosystem relevant in a constantly changing landscape.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has approved the project, indicating that the company plans to maintain its presence in the hardware market. Furthermore, this new generation could include improvements in backward compatibility and new digital distribution options , such as the ability to install third-party stores like the Epic Games Store or GOG.
The launch of the 'Keenan' handheld console represents a significant step for Microsoft in its goal of strengthening the Xbox ecosystem. With a clear focus on cross-platform compatibility , this new device could mark the beginning of a new era in the gaming industry, where flexibility and accessibility take center stage.
